Date 24th October’17
Dear Parent or Guardian,
There has been a case of headlice in your child’s school and your child may have been exposed.
What are headlice?
Headlice are little insects with moving legs. They are often not much bigger than a pin head, but may be as big as a sesame seed (the seeds on burger buns). They live on, or very close to, the scalp and don’t wander far down the hair shaft for very long. They can only live on humans; you cannot catch them from animals.
What are nits?
Nits are not the same thing as lice. Nits are egg cases laid by lice, stuck on to hair shafts. They are smaller than a pin head and pearly white. If you have nits it doesn’t always mean that you have headlice. When you get rid of all the lice, the nits will stay stuck to the hair until it grows out.
How are they spread?
Anyone can pick up headlice. They are most common among young children as they often put heads together during play allowing the lice walk from one head to the next. Headlice do not reflect standards of hygiene. They are just as willing to live in clean or dirty hair.
Can you stop them?
The best way is for families to learn how to check their own heads. This way they find any lice before they have a chance to breed. They can then treat them and stop them being passed round the family. The way to check someone’s head is called “detection combing”. This should be done regularly and in the case of a confirmed infection in one family member, the other members of the household should carry out “detection combing” twice weekly for one week.
How do I do detection combing?
You need a plastic detection comb, good lighting and an ordinary comb.
- Wash the hair well, then dry it with a towel. The hair should be damp, not dripping. A small amount of conditioner may help if the hair is tangled.
- Make sure there is good light, daylight is best.
- Comb the hair with an ordinary comb.
- Start with the teeth of the detection comb touching the skin of the scalp at the top of the head.
- Draw the comb carefully towards the edge of the hair.
- Look carefully at the teeth of the comb in good light.
- If there are headlice, you will find one or more lice on the teeth of the comb. A magnifying glass may be useful in identifying lice.
- Do this over and over again from the top of the head to the edge of the hair in all directions, working round the head.
- Do this for several minutes. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to do it properly for each head.
Who needs treatment?
Only treat those who have living, moving lice. If more than one family member has lice, treat all those at the same time.
How do I treat them?
A headlice lotion (not shampoo) should be used. Ask your local pharmacist, public health nurse or GP which lotion to
use, and how long to leave it on. Follow the instructions that come with the particular product.
- Repeat treatment again seven days later, in the same way, with the same lotion.
- Check all heads a day or two after the second treatment. If you still find living, moving lice, ask your public health nurse or GP for advice.

Dear Parents,
P.A. AGM:
It was lovely to meet so many of you at the Parent’s Association A.G.M. last night. Thank you for your continued support.
Communication:
As I stated last night, apologies for not being able to text out on Monday night re school closure on Tuesday, but I had no internet or phone at home on Monday. Luckily I was able to text from the school on Tuesday. In the event of a severe weather outbreak and not being able to text again I will do my best to contact South East Radio to get information to you.
Anti – Cyber Bullying Presentation:
Unfortunately, we have had to postpone tonight’s Anti-Cyber Bullying Presentation by Ger Brick. The workshops for the children today have also been postponed. Ger would have needed access to the internet to give his presentations. I will inform you as soon as we have arranged a new date.
Yours sincerely,

The school has representatives on both the boys and girls football teams in this year’s Rackard League competitions. We also took part in the Mini 7s football competitions last month. Many thanks to parents for driving to the matches and supporting the games.

It can be found on www.education.ie. click on Publications on the left-hand side, then Inspection Reports and Whole School Evaluation Reports.

I would encourage as many of you as possible to attend what promises to be a very informative event.

12th September’17
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to everyone for the new school year. I would like to welcome our Special Education Teacher Ms Kavanagh. A big welcome to all of our new pupils who appear to be settling in very well and a special welcome to our Junior Infants. – Emily Murphy, Annabella O’Neill and Diarmuid Broderick-Foxe.
I have a few notices to bring to your attention as we begin the new year.
- P.E. day will be Friday this term , so the school tracksuit should be worn on that day. The GAA coaches will be with us every Friday from September 15th to October 27th .
- Our Healthy Lunch Policy continues to be a great success with all the children doing their best to eat more fruit and vegetables and healthy snacks. One treat is allowed on Friday. I would ask parents to ensure that this treat is a small treat only. Also, some of the younger children have difficulty with yogurt and “Frubes” so these might be best eaten at home – hopefully this will save a lot of messy jumpers.
- The Board of Management has asked me to inform you that school opens to receive pupils at 9.20am each morning. School finishes at 3.00pm each day. The Board accepts no responsibility for pupils outside of these times.
- From time to time parents may wish to discuss an issue with either Mr. O’Flaherty or myself. We welcome any opportunity to meet with you but if a problem has occurred and you wish to discuss an issue at length, please phone the school to arrange a meeting at a time that suits everyone. This will ensure that we can give you our full attention.
- Each child has been given a homework journal. The children in the Senior Classes will use this to write down their homework every day. Parents and teachers can use the section on the bottom of the right-hand page of each week to send brief messages to and from home.
- There is an insert in the journal containing Absence Notes. If your child is absent from school, please fill in one of these notes and ask your child to give it to his/her teacher on his/her return to school. Using the homework journal in this way has made the recording of school absences more efficient.
- If a child is absent for 20 days or more, the school is obliged to report the absences to TUSLA- the Child and Family Agency. I will be in contact with you if 15 days absence has occurred.
- As part of our Green Schools programme, we plan to continue to send messages/newsletters via text/email as much as we can this year. If you are willing to receive newsletters etc by e-mail please fill an e-mail address on the form attached to this newsletter and return to the school. Please note that if you receive a text message from the school, this a no-reply service – we will not get a text from you if you send one.
- Our School Mass will be celebrated on Thursday 21st September at 1.15pm in the school. You are all most welcome to attend.
- Ursula will be in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am – 2pm. If you need to contact the school outside of these times, please leave a message on the phone and I will try to return your call either during lunchtime or after 3pm.
- The school’s Administration of Medicine Policy is on the school’s website. Please read this policy and contact me if your child needs to take medication of any kind during school hours.
- The Board of Management has decided that each family will be asked to accept the school’s Anti Bullying Policy every year. We have decided to explain the relevant sections of the policy to the children during our Friendship Week which will take place during the first week in October. During that week I will send home a form for parents to sign indicating that they agree to the policy. In the meantime, the policy is available for you to read on the school’s website – shielbagganns.scoilnet.ie/blog. If anyone would like a hard copy of the policy, please let me know.
- Well done to our show jumping team of Danny Katie and Jessie. The team was placed 5th in the 1st round in the Inter Schools show jumping at the weekend.
- There are a number of forms etc to be filled at this time of year. For our new families I enclose:
- Photography/Video consent form

They will travel by bus and will be accompanied by Mr. O’Flaherty and two parents. The children must wear runners for their races. They will need a packed lunch, raingear and/or sunscreen,( depending on the weather). They may wear their school tracksuit. Normal school rules apply on this as on every trip.

We will travel by bus which will leave school at 9.00am sharp on Friday morning. The children may wear their school tracksuit and shorts if they wish. They should bring runners as well as football boots. They will need a packed lunch and should bring raingear/sunscreen (depending on the weather). Ms. McCarron and I will accompany the children on the bus.
Wexford Team:
Well done to Joe McPhillips, who represented the school last Friday in an inter-county school football blitz in Kilkenny. I’m sure it won’t be Joe’s only time in a Wexford jersey.
Reports:
The school reports will be posted today. Please contact the school if you need to discuss any aspect of the reports.
End of Year Mass:
A reminder that our End of Year Mass will take place on Wednesday June 21st at 1.30pm. All are most welcome to attend, particularly grandparents, carers and other relatives of the children. As we will be including a special prayer for grandparents in our Mass the children may, if they wish bring a photo of their grandparents, which can be included in our Offertory procession. We will have a cup of tea after Mass and the children may go home with their parents/guardians after the tea.
Senior Tour:
The Senior Tour will take place on Monday next, June 19th. To save the expense of a bus, it would be great if the children were dropped to Shielbaggan Outdoor Education Centre and collected from there at 4.00pm. The day will be divided into Land Activities and Water Activities.
The following is a list of clothing that the children will need for the day.
Swimming Togs, Towel, T- shirt, Sweatshirt /Jumper, Old Runners, Plastic bag for wet clothes, Sun screen, Change of socks and runners, Strong trousers eg. Tracksuit bottoms, Rain Jacket.
They will also need a good packed lunch and drinks.
The activities will be tailored to suit the abilities of the children and the emphasis will be on participation and having fun.

Many thanks to Maureen Costello (Up 2U fitness) for giving of her time and expertise to put us through our paces on Thursday.

The 5th and 6th class pupils are currently taking part in a five-week cycling course which is being facilitated by Shielbaggan Outdoor Education Centre. Dear Parents
Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to you all for putting so much work into the field-day last Sunday. It was such a great success and that was down to your hard work. The children will have great memories to take with them. Thanks to Stephanie, Hazel, Tom and Norma for doing a great job organising the day and of course congratulations to Norma on being crowned “Queen of the Jungle”!.
Active School Week:
Next week, we will have our first Active School Week. This is a requirement of our application for the Active School Flag. The children may wear their school tracksuits every day next week. During the week, we will have activities for all classes – the idea is that the children are active for at least 60 minutes each day for the week. Homework next week will be P.E. homework only. I hope the weather is good enough for us to get out every day, but even if it’s not we will be active.
WES-MLL:
As you know, our inspector, Ms Noreen Bambury was here for two and a half days this week for our Whole School Evaluation-Management of Leadership and Learning (WSE-MLL). Her report will be issued in due course and I will let you know when it is available. A big thank you is due to the children who were so courteous and well–behaved during her visit.
Education Passport:
The 6th class school report card is slightly different to their other reports. Part of the report includes “My Profile” which the children fill out themselves and “My Child’s Profile” which is filled out by parents. I have sent home “My Child’s Profile with the 6th class children today. If you wish to fill out the form please send it back to the school next week.

If you haven’t sent in any of these items it would be great if we have them this week.
- The children from 3rd -6th class will be taking part in the Sing Out Loud Concert, in the National Opera House in Wexford on Monday November 21st. The children have been busy since September practising the songs and will join a number of other schools on the stage on the night. In order to give the children a chance to get something to eat and to change their clothes, all the children in the school will go home at 1.30pm on Monday 21st November’16 and the Sing Out Loud children will need to be back at the school at 3.00pm on the day to travel by bus to Wexford. I will write to the parents of children in my room nearer to the day with further details.
- Our annual Parent/Teacher meetings will take place this year on Thursday 8th December from 3.15 pm to 5.45pm. A timetable will be sent out to you after our mid-term break. If this day doesn’t suit you, please contact the school and we can arrange a day and time to suit.
- Following on from the success of last year’s Science Week exhibition, we will once again hold a Science afternoon in the school to coincide with Science Week 1. 30pm on Wednesday November 16th is the date for your diary.
- Well done to the girls Rackard League football team on reaching the District Final last week. Unfortunately they were beaten by a very strong Cushinstown team. The boys play their Co. Semi-final this evening (Tuesday 25th) in Taghmon at 3.30pm. They will play Bunclody. Best of luck boys! Many thanks to the parents who have driven to matches and training over the last few weeks.
- As has become a custom here recently, the children may dress up in Hallowe’en costumes to come to school on Friday. As always the emphasis is on being a “Green” school so please use homemade /recyclable items for the costumes as much as possible.
- Oonagh Hearne Messette from the local RNLI was delighted to receive €70 towards the new lifeboat, from us last week. The money had been collected at our Sports Day in June. Many thanks to all for donating that day.
- As part of our S.P.H.E. programme, we are introducing two new programmes into the school this year to teach the children about friendships and to reinforce the anti-bullying message. O’Flaherty’s classes have already started “Zippy’s Friends” and the senior classes will start “Friends for Life” in the next couple of months- as soon as I’ve completed the in-service training.
- PE Day will be on Tuesdays when we come back after the break, so the children can wear their tracksuits on Tuesdays.
- Finally, our mid-term break is next week! School will close at 3.00pm on Friday 28th October and will re-open at 9.20am on Monday November 7th. I hope you all have a safe and not too spooky break.
Yours sincerely

Please note that I will be taking EPV (Extra Personal Vacation) Days on the following dates:
Monday 25th April’16

FAI Soccer:
We had a great day yesterday in Ferrycarrig Park at the Wexford finals of the FAI 5-a-side soccer tournament. Our 6th class boys team played three group matches and as a result of winning two of these, made it to the final of the A Cup. In the final they faced a team from Ballyellis N.S. The boys battled hard for the full match and were unfortunate to concede a goal in the last seconds of the game to lose 1-0.
We are all very proud of the boys for the effort they put in during the tournament and for accepting their defeat graciously. I must add also that I was very proud of our children from 3rd to 6th class who travelled to support the boys. They were very well behaved all day and thoroughly deserved their ice-cream on the way home. Thanks too to the parents who supported us on the day.

Reminder that the Confirmation children’s Ceremony of Light will take place on Saturday night next 16th April at 7.30pm in the church in Ramsgrange. Each child needs to bring their Baptismal candle to the Mass
